Dr Emma Laycock was a Volunteer Writer at BioNews, having originally joined the publication under the auspices of its writing scheme. She is a Policy Officer at the Academy of Medical Sciences and previously studied for a PhD in Stem Cell Biology at University College London, Cancer Institute modelling how childhood leukaemia develops in utero. Prior to this, she worked as a Journal Development Editor at BioMed Central, responsible for a cluster of biotechnology journals. She originally studied Biomedical Science at the University of Warwick, and her degree included an intercalated year at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control and a summer placement at the National University of Ireland in Galway, studying whooping cough and water contaminants respectively.
