Ancient viruses in our genome linked to neurodegenerative conditions
Remnants of ancient viral DNA in the human genome are associated with two neurodegenerative diseases: multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease...
Dr Paige Mumford is a Volunteer Writer at BioNews, having originally joined the publication under the auspices of its writing scheme. She completed a PhD, and is now working as a postdoctural researcher, in Neuroscience at the UK Dementia Research Institute, where she works in Dr Frances Wiseman's team at University College London (UCL). Her research explores how neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease is different in people with Down's syndrome than it is in people without Down's syndrome, due to specific chromosome 21 genes, and her work focuses on genes involved in interferon response. Previously, she studied Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley, and went on to obtain an MSc in Neuroscience at UCL.D
