Modernising the Regulation of Fertility Treatment and Research Involving Human Embryos
In 2023, PET submitted a response to a consultation by the UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).
The consultation was entitled Modernising the Regulation of Fertility Treatment and Research Involving Human Embryos. It concerned proposed changes to the law governing fertility treatment and embryo research – specifically, to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act (which was originally passed in 1990 and was given a thoroughgoing update in 2008).
PET's submission can be downloaded here. It covers the four areas into which the consultation was divided:
- Patient safety and promoting good practice
- Access to donor information
- Consent
- Scientific developments
Following the consultation, the HFEA is expected to submit recommendations for law reform to the UK Government.
