Donald Trump has called himself the 'father of IVF' at a townhall for women voters earlier this month. Read more from Reuters and Professor Roger Gosden.
IVF has become an important issue in the run-up to the US presidential election on 5 November 2024. The Harris campaign have warned that IVF access could be banned in some states under a Republican government due to its stance on abortion, while Trump has maintained his position that he supports 'universal access' to IVF (see BioNews 1258 and 1254).
Trump's most recent comments follow the Democrats' recent attempt to pass their Right to IVF Act in the Senate, which aimed to guarantee federal protections and insurance coverage for fertility treatment. The bill was blocked by Republican senators last month for the second time (see BioNews 1257 and 1243).
Professor Roger Gosden said 'Whatever you think about the proposals, you probably agree the bill suffered an inevitable fate that reflects the sorry state of partisan politics and another waste of congressional time.' Read more from Professor Gosden here.
