Before taking up a writing and editing career, Richard was a lab scientist for 28 years, in various disciplines including molecular genomics, diabetes, kidney disease, intestinal membrane transport mechanisms and paediatric lung function. He has published widely on a range of topics. He gained his bachelor's degree in human biology from Oxford Polytechnic (now Oxford Brookes University). He was awarded a PhD in physiology and child health from St George's University of London, where he researched the changes in lung epithelial function occurring before, during and after birth.
