Dr Richard Stephens is the Science Editor at BioNews and at the charity that publishes it, the Progress Educational Trust (PET). Together with his fellow BioNews editor Dr Joanne Delange, he runs the BioNews writing scheme, which provides practical science writing training and experience for PhD students. Before taking up a writing and editing career, Richard was a lab scientist for 28 years, in various disciplines including molecular genomics, diabetes, kidney disease, intestinal membrane transport mechanisms and paediatric lung function. He has published widely on a range of topics. He gained his bachelor's degree in human biology from Oxford Polytechnic (now Oxford Brookes University). He was awarded a PhD in physiology and child health from St George's University of London, where he researched the changes in lung epithelial function occurring before, during and after birth.
