High altitude hiking and sleep apnoea reduce the level of oxygen in the testes and negatively impact sperm quality and reproductive health, according to a review published in Nature Review Urology.
The review examined findings from multiple studies to further understand the causes and effects of testicular hypoxia.
Dr Tessa Lord, who led the review, from the University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, wrote that 'impaired fertility from high-altitude [hiking] is generally reversible,' but that more research is needed to 'understand the full extent of the generational impact.'
