A multidisciplinary workshop held earlier this year, organised by researchers at the Universities of of Sheffield and Lancaster, explored regulation of emerging technologies including stem-cell-based embryo models and in vitro gametogenesis (IVG).
In particular, the workshop explored how new technologies are challenging established definitions of gametes and embryos, and could therefore place current regulatory frameworks under strain.
Participants included Sarah Norcross and Sandy Starr of PET, plus a number of experts who have written for BioNews. One of those who gave a presentation was geneticist Dr Andy Greenfield, discussing his work on IVG and regulation – work that he has since discussed in a recent edition of BioNews (see BioNews 1351).
