Journalist Anna Tobin discovered that she carries a variant in the CHEK2 gene after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
After testing negative for mutations in the better-known BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, Tobin underwent further genetic testing that identified a CHEK2 gene variant, which she had not previously heard of.
The CHEK2 gene, which encodes a protein involved in controlling cell division, was linked to breast cancer risk in 2004. Around one in 200 people carry an altered CHEK2 gene.
