Testosterone therapy is widely promoted on social media. It is often sold through online pharmacies and marketed to young, healthy men as helping with energy levels, increasing muscle mass and sporting performance.
However, when people go on testosterone therapy, the body can stop making the hormone naturallly, leading to potential fertility problems such as low sperm count.
'Men are very driven by optimisation of health and performance,' said Dr Ryan Smith, a urologist at UVA Health in Charlottesville, Virginia. 'So I think they can be misled in terms of what potential benefits could be from taking these testosterone treatments.'
'I've seen a lot of men who have pursued this [testosterone therapy] and end up in our clinics with complications related to it,' he added.
