The association of foundations that promote the sciences and humanities in Germany, the Stifterverband fur die Deutsche Wissenschaft, has launched a DM500,000 (US $260,000) programme called the Public Understanding of Sciences and Humanities - modelled on a similar scheme in the UK. This is the first move made by a group of research organisations (including the Max Planck Society and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) to encourage scientists to communicate the significance of research results to the public. An independent jury will give out awards to scientists for projects that successfully demonstrate the immediate application of science and technology for everyday life. Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) has also launched an initiative to coordinate and promote genome research in Germany.
The publication, 'Perspectives of genome research,' argues for the clinical and economic potential of genome research, pointing out the status of gene technologies in other countries. The document also outlines the measures that must be taken if Germany is to stand ground against international competition in this field.
