Matthew Smart was previously a Volunteer Writer at BioNews, having originally joined the publication under the auspices of its writing scheme. He is a Fight for Sight supported PhD student at the University College London's Institute of Ophthalmology, where his research focuses on the use of stem cell technologies to produce sources of retinal cells for transplantation into patients with degenerative retinal disorders.
