Demand for egg freezing has increased significantly in recent years in the USA, and similar trends have been reported in the UK (see BioNews 1295). However, costs remain high, at an average of $15,000 - $20,000 in major US cities.
In her recently published book, The Mother Code, journalist Ruthie Ackerman suggests that the increased popularity of egg freezing in the USA is creating a new 'fertility wealth gap' between men and women. She writes: 'Young women are bearing the brunt of the financial burden to be able to have children later in life, even though men benefit from starting families later, too.'
