Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia have discovered a single gene that allows self-renewal of spermatogonial stem cells, which give rise to sperm.
They discovered mice without the DOT1L gene were unable to sustain sperm stem cells and therefore sperm cell production, in results outlined in a paper published in Genes and Development.
