The Genetics and Insurance Committee (GAIC) has issued a public consultation on the criteria it will use to evaluate the use of specific genetic tests for insurance purposes, announced the Department of Health last week. The committee has developed an application form for use by the insurance industry, which requires them to seek approval to use a genetic test result for risk assessment.
'I am pleased with the work of GAIC in developing the criteria', said Chairman Professor John Durant. 'The committee recognises that this is a complex subject of great importance to the public, industry and government alike.'
The public consultation ends in March, and GAIC will review all responses in April 2000. Copies of the consultation documents (the application form and accompanying notes) can be obtained from: The Genetics Secretariat, Department of Health, Room 401, Wellington House, Waterloo Road, London SE1 8UG and on the Department of Health website.
