Seren Hughes was a 19-year old student at Salford University, Greater Manchester, when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her personal story is detailed in this article in Wired, including how Hughes is taking part in Our Future Health (see BioNews 1165), which will explore potential uses of genetic risk scores by analysing genomic data and NHS health records. The aim is to develop advances in the management and treatment of cancer, among other diseases.
The article continues, explaining how genomic data can be used in the development of improved prevention, detection and treatment of cancer.
'… the idea of finding a cure for all cancers is not the way researchers are approaching it,' explained Dr Mathew Garnett, group leader at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, Cambridge. 'Rather, we think about developing effective therapies within different subtypes of cancer.'
Dr Garnett's work investigates how genetic alterations contribute to cancer and impact on patient responses to anti-cancer medicines.
