Dr Alan Colman, one of the scientists involved in the creation of Dolly the sheep, has decided to leave Britain because of a lack of research funding. He says that he is finding it impossible to find the money needed to fund his stem cell research project looking for cures for diabetes.
Colman will leave his post as research director at PPL therapeutics in Edinburgh, Scotland, and move to Singapore to become chief scientific officer of a company called ES Cell International. The Singapore company specialises in the commercial development of embryonic stem cells. Colman criticised the UK Government for providing 'substandard' investment in research compared to other countries.
He told the Scotland on Sunday newspaper 'I am a scientist and the type of science I want to do is expensive and I'll go where the investment is made. If I could stay in Scotland and do it I would, but there's no way I'd get the scale of resources I need'.
