A new organoid model of human ovaries, dubbed ovaroids, has been developed from stem cells to offer insights into infertility and gonad development. The research was presented at the first Joint Congress between the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology and the European Society of Endocrinology.
Ovaroids were first developed at Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, Massachusetts (see BioNews 1180). To understand gonad development and dysfunction, researchers from the Institut Pasteur, Paris, France, differentiated human induced pluripotent stem cells into two ovarian cell types that, together, replicate key structural and functional aspects of ovarian follicles.
