Hong Kong is trying to reverse its exceptionally low birth rates, but strict rules on fertility treatment have resulted in many women choosing to pursue IVF treatment abroad.
Black market brokerages for eggs and embryos are using dating app-like services to connect single women with sperm donors overseas. A ten-year term limit on the storing of frozen eggs, embryos and sperm are also leading to an increase in young Hong Kong residents travelling to countries with less restrictive policies, or accessing unregulated clinics.
