A bill protecting access to IVF in Louisiana has been passed. This follows a scare in 2024, in which the Supreme Court in the neighbouring state of Alabama issued a ruling, defining IVF embryos as children, temporarily halting IVF in that state (see BioNews 1229 and 1228).
The bill, SB156, passed the Louisiana House of Representatives on a vote of 82-14, with some Republicans opposed. It had previously passed the Senate in a vote of 34-5. The bill now goes back to the Senate for its consideration of House amendments.
