The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has announced details of its sixth work programme, which will include the development of guidelines for infertility services and for managing genetic risk of familial breast cancer.
NICE was set up in 1999 to tackle the 'postcode lottery' whereby drugs and services are available in one health authority but not in another. A total of 14 technologies (including drugs) and 10 clinical guidelines have been referred to NICE by the Health Minister, Lord Hunt. No mention has been made of how long it will take NICE to publish its findings.
Meanwhile, Sir John Sulston has been appointed as a member of the Human Genetics Commission. Sulston, who is former director of the Sanger Centre and was responsible for sequencing the genome of the nematode worm, will replace outgoing member, John Durrant.
