Neurologists Professor Martin Cheung and Dr Jessica Aija Liu from the University of Hong Kong have modulated SOX9 gene expression to recover movement in mouse models of spinal cord injury.
The scientists grafted human pluripotent stem cells with 50 percent-reduced SOX9 expression into a mouse model of spinal cord injury, and these cells generated new neuronal cells in the injured area.
They have published their research in Advanced Science.
