A Scottish fertility clinic is offering men free porridge if they donate sperm, in an attempt to tackle a sperm donor shortage, the Sun newspaper reported last week. The breakfast deal is part of a poster campaign designed to boost sperm donor numbers - there are just six donors in the Lothians region and 26 in Scotland as a whole, according to newspaper reports.
The porridge posters, which say 'You give us your oats, we'll give you your porage' will be erected in Edinburgh's Sheriffhall park-and-ride during the marketing initiative by Spire Healthcare's Shawfair Hospital and IVF Scotland. Other posters in the campaign show tartan sperm swimming towards tartan eggs and have slogans like 'Your country needs you' and 'Rise and be a nation again'.
NHS Lothian has one of the longest waiting lists in Scotland for IVF treatment, with people waiting up to three years, according to the Scotsman newspaper.
