John Prescott, UK's deputy prime minister, has decided in favour of the Cambridgeshire local planning authority in its dispute with the Wellcome Trust's £100m proposal to extend the Hinxton Genome Campus. Mr Prescott is thought to have been persuaded that the site in Hinxton, outside Cambridge, is not appropriate for a major extension because it would go against government guidelines on the use of agricultural land and on transport policy. Wellcome wants to provide space for small biotechnology companies to be close to the genome work taking place in the campus in order to commercialise research generated by the campus' three laboratories. It has argued that the project could create as many as a thousand jobs and that the UK needs to encourage the 'cluster-style' development that has characterised the growth of the new industries in US.
