The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published guidelines last week for maintaining quality control in US fertility clinics. The model certification program can be used by individual states for inspecting and certifying laboratories. Certification by states is voluntary and each state may choose to implement its own programme based on the model.
The model consists of a set of standards for the performance of laboratory procedures, maintenance of records, qualifications for laboratory personnel and criteria for the inspection and certification of laboratories. The guidelines have been welcomed by David Adamson, President of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART).
Affiliated to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) which publishes its own ethics and practice guidelines, SART has a membership of more than 90% of clinics in the US offering assisted reproductive treatment.
