Variants in genes on the X chromosome may be linked to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and could provide clues as to why ASD is more prevalent in males, according to two recent studies.
Variants in DDX53 were found to be maternally inherited and present in males in a study from the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Canada and the Istituto Giannina Gaslini in Italy. The second study, led by SickKids, found 59 genetic variants on the X chromosome associated with ASD.
