New prospective parents have been found for the twins being carried by British surrogate Helen Beasley. Ms Beasley had had a surrogacy arrangement with an American couple, but is currently involved in legal action against them after they 'abandoned' her when she refused to abort one of the two fetuses. She has filed lawsuits in the San Diego Superior Court for breach of contract and misrepresentation, and is claiming damages for unspecified medical costs and trauma.
The couple, Charles Wheeler and Martha Berman from San Francisco, are said to have put forward another couple who are willing to become the parents of the unborn children. It is reported that the new couple have undergone medical and psychological testing and have been approved by their state regulatory agency.
In addition to the prospective parents found by the original commissioning couple, there are reports that Ms Beasley has received a large number of calls from people who have volunteered to adopt the babies. It is thought that Ms Beasley would like to 'have a say in who the adoptive parents should be and did not accept the couple proposed by Mr Wheeler and Mrs Berman'. Many of those who have volunteered had contacted surrogacy agencies in California in order to find out how to get in touch with Ms Beasley or her lawyer. Ms Beasley, who was worried that she would not be able to afford to raise the babies herself, said 'Thank God the babies are going to be OK. I'm going to find them the best parents in the world.'
