The Swiss public have voted overwhelmingly against further restrictions on assisted reproduction, following a referendum on 12 March. Seventy-five per cent of the population rejected a proposal to ban IVF (in vitro fertilisation) and sperm donation, which would have left non-donor insemination as the only permitted technique. The call for a ban was submitted by feminist and religious groups, who have campaigned against reproductive medicine since the birth of the first Swiss IVF baby in 1985.
Currently, the law in Switzerland forbids conservation of embryos, genetic testing of embryos, human cloning, egg and sperm donation and surrogate pregnancy.
