Towana Looney, from Alabama, has become the third person to receive a kidney from a genetically modified pig. The first pig-to-human kidney transplant took place in March 2024 (see BioNews 1232).
Looney, who donated a kidney to her mother in 1999, had been highly ranked on the waiting list for a human kidney. Her health prior to the transplant has given her doctors hope that her new kidney will last longer than those of her predecessors, both of whom were close to death when their transplants took place.
