Dr Amina Aitsi-Selmi was previously a Volunteer Writer at BioNews, having originally joined the publication under the auspices of its writing scheme. She is also a Senior Research Fellow at University College London (UCL)'s Institute of Health Equity. Previously, she studied Medicine and Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge, during which time she had a placement within the Cuban public health system and wrote a related report for the journal Public Health. She went on to train as a public health doctor specialising in health inequalities, working in Sudan (on a humanitarian mission with Médecins Sans Frontieres) and in Switzerland (through an NHS exchange programme). She acquired her PhD at UCL's Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, under the supervision of Professor Sir Michael Marmot and under the auspices of a Research Training Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust, where her research focused on the role of education and wealth in female obesity in lower-income countries (including China and Egypt).
