Lynne Smit is Science Editor at BioNews and at the charity that publishes it, the Progress Educational Trust (PET). She also works for Nature Africa as Senior Editor. Together with her fellow BioNews editor Dr Joanne Delange, she runs the BioNews writing scheme, which provides practical science writing training and experience for PhD students.
Lynne has been a science journalist and communicator for more than 20 years, honing her career through roles including Senior Writer at WHO's African headquarters, Editor of Our Genes (Africa Genome Education Institute), and collaborations with academic institutions and the scientific committees of international medical conferences. She regularly mentors science journalists, particularly in Africa. She is past president of the South African Science Journalists' Association and past chair of the South African Freelancers' Association. She is also the author of five college textbooks and the editor of The Architect and the Scaffold, a book on the teaching of evolution in South Africa.
