Professors Martin Evans and Robert Edwards have both been awarded an Albert Lasker Medical Research Award, often known as the 'American Nobel Prize'. Martin Evans, of Cardiff University, was given the Basic Medical Research prize for his work into gene targeting, or the creation of 'designer mice' and other animals, and for his part in the first isolation of mammalian embryonic stem cells.
Robert Edwards' Clinical Medical Research prize was for his pioneering work into IVF. His initial research into infertility began in the 1950s and culminated, after collaboration with Dr Patrick Steptoe, in the birth of the first IVF baby, Louise Brown, in 1978.
