A UK-based genetics 'watchdog' has criticised a firm which was selling a genetic testing kit through the national chain of Body Shop stores. GeneWatch UK says that the kit, made by Sciona, is a 'rip-off' and misleads the public.
The kit has been defended by both the Body Shop and Sciona, who say that it is designed to promote healthy living. Customers pay an annual fee of £120 when they send in a DNA sample from the inside of their cheek, accompanied by their answers to a 'lifestyle questionnaire'. Sciona claims that the 'You and Your Genes' screen identifies a person's particular dietary needs, and then allows recommendations to be made so that subscribers can achieve a higher level of general health.
The tests are unregulated and they are available at 11 of the Body Shop chain's larger stores. GeneWatch UK says that the tests are 'irresponsible' and 'misleading' and that they exaggerate links between genetics, diet and health. The watchdog advises people not to use the test.
The UK's Human Genetics Commission is due to meet with Sciona next month in order to discuss the test and its implications.
