A genome-edited pig kidney has been removed from a transplant patient after it started losing function.
The patient, who had heart failure and end-stage kidney disease that required routine dialysis, received the transplant on 12 April 2024.
The surgery, which took place at NYU Langone Health in New York, was the first to combine a mechanical heart pump as well as a genome-edited pig kidney and the pig's thymus gland.
The kidney was removed 47 days post surgery due to 'unique challenges in managing both her cardiovascular health and kidney function' according to NYU Langone Health.
The patient is stable and has begun dialysis.
