All pregnant women in the Netherlands will now be offered free non-invasive prenatal testing as part of the standard, publicly-funded prenatal screening programme.
The decision follows the completion of two successful trials that investigated the impact of offering the test to all women, according to Amsterdam University Medical Centres. The test had been available to women at high risk of having a child with Down's syndrome since 2014 in the country, and this change expands its availability.
