A lipid molecule has been found to play a key role in regulating sperm capacitation – the process whereby sperm become capable of fertilising an egg – according to new research carried out at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, and published in Human Reproduction.
Because obesity is linked to higher lipid levels in the reproductive organs, these findings may provide a clue to the causes of infertility in 34 percent of men where no clear explanation for their condition is known.
