Dr Joseph Gall, former biologist in the department of embryology at Carnegie Science, Washington DC, has died at the age of 96.
Often called the 'Father of Modern Cell Biology' for his contributions to our understanding of chromosomes and the cellular nucleus, by showing that most chromosomes contain a single DNA molecule stretching from end to end.
Alongside his graduate student, Dr Mary-Lou Pardue, Dr Gall developed in situ hybridisation, which allows researchers to locate and map genes on chromosomal DNA.
