A teenager diagnosed with cancer underwent ovarian tissue cryopreservation surgery in London in May this year, marking the first time the surgery has been performed in the capital, according to the Evening Standard.
Forty members of staff were involved in the surgery to preserve the fertility of a 14-year-old girl at Evelina London Children's Hospital, before she underwent a stem cell transplant to treat her chronic myeloid leukaemia.
This surgery is offered to people too young to produce mature eggs, or too ill to wait the two to three weeks it might take to collect egg cells to use in future fertility treatment. It is hoped the tissue can be regrafted at a later date and restore the girl's menstrual cycle and fertility.
