Scotland has become the first part of the UK to offer screening for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a rare genetic condition, as part of routine newborn checks.
Under the new pilot programme, all parents in Scotland are offered SMA screening for their babies through the existing bloodspot (heel prick) test taken about four days after birth.
