Women who have acted as surrogates in the UK generally support proposals to recognise intended parents as legal parents from birth.
These findings were reported in International Journal of Law, Policy and the Family by researchers based at the London Women's Clinic, after surveying surrogates who had treatment there, about their experiences and views on surrogacy. The hope the findings could inform public and parliamentary debates to come in the UK, as draft legislation surrounding surrogacy in the UK is expected next year following a joint review by the English and Scottish Law Commissions.
Surrogates were asked about their views on regulation and advertising of surrogacy. Surrogacy is legal across the UK, though the paper highlighted PET's survey finding that 74 percent of the British public were unaware that surrogacy was permitted in all four nations (see BioNews 1148).
