Winston to receive prize for public understanding of science

Lord Robert Winston is to receive the Royal Society Michael Faraday Award for the furtherance of the public understanding of science. The award has been made in recognition of Winston's wide-ranging effort in communicating reproductive science to a large public audience through his media appearances and his numerous publications. The Royal Society particularly recognises his achievement in bringing together the clinical and ethical issues in this area of science. Winston's TV series, 'Your life in their hands', reached an audience of 8 million viewers. More recently, his 1998 BBC1 series, 'The human body', was transmitted by several international channels and won three Bafta awards. Lord Winston will receive the award on 30 November 1999. He will give the Michael Faraday lecture in January 2000 when the Society plays host to The Daily Telegraph's Scientists meet the Media party.
