New research published in Science has shown that polyploid cells may help tissues respond to injuries and species survive cataclysms.
Polyploid cells, which have extra copies of their genomes, were once thought to be harmful anomalies, notorious for helping drive cancer growth... But now, data suggests 80 percent of the cells in the human heart are polyploid by adulthood, up from none at birth.
