Researchers are using artificial intelligence (AI) to develop new CRISPR genome-editing methods designed to improve precision.
CRISPR genome editors rely on proteins that can recognise and modify specific DNA sequences. However, unintended edits at other locations in the genome remain a challenge for some applications.
In one study, AI models were used to analyse CRISPR protein–DNA interactions and identify changes that improved the targeting of a base editor in laboratory experiments. In another, researchers used AI to design new CRISPR proteins, several of which edited genes in bacterial, plant and human cells.
The researchers said further testing will be needed to determine whether these AI-designed genome editors are suitable for use in living organisms and potential medical applications.
