An international team of researchers, including scientists from University College London and Oxford University, studied genetic variants from about 8000 people and investigated their pain thresholds.
The findings, published in Communications Biology, show that current descendants of Neanderthals carry three gene variants, which make them more sensitive to mechanical pain (pain in spinal joints, discs, vertebrae, or soft tissues) but not so much to heat-related or pressure-related pains.
