A woman who used a surrogate and donor egg and sperm cells to have a baby, has been told she must adopt the baby by the Israeli High Court.
The Court refused to recognise her as the legal parent on the basis of an agreement she had signed with the donors, or that a family court in the USA had recognised her as the sole parent of the child, Haaretz reported.
Justice David Mintz has recommended that legislation is created to avoid this situation occurring again.
He wrote in his ruling: 'Recognition of parental status absent a genetic or biological connection between the intended parents and the newborn, with all of the many heavy and far-reaching meanings, is not a matter for private agreements between parties.'
